Gizlof's Dying Wish

The story below was written before the events of Langrisser V were decided. Its contents are not technically related to the final game.

However, it may contain some spoilers that would lessen your enjoyment of the actual story. As such, we recommend that one finish playing before reading it.

Gizlof's laboratory now existed only as a forgotten pile of rubble in the wilderness of Regenburg. It had been one year since its destruction at the climax of the war with Caconsis. Gizlof's beasts still roamed this area uncontested, and it became known as an area for most men to steer clear of.

However, the laboratory was not destroyed in its entirety. Certain machines still functioned. Most of the creatures sealed in vats of cultivating fluid failed to develop properly and perished stillborn. As their vats shut down, more power could be routed to the remaining machines, of which there were only two.

“Cultivation procedure returned with no error. Beginning wake procedure on subject.”

A faint draining sound emanated from the cultivation vat. The hatch eased itself open. “Subject Σ066 awakening procedure returned with no error.”

A young man stepped out. He looked around with an anxious look on his face. “Where… am I…?” he wondered, and headed up to the outside world.

As he surfaced, he realized he was in the middle of a ruin in the middle of a forest. He didn't know that this was where Gizlof once studied the secrets of immortality and where his grand designs would finally perish.

“Damn! Where am I? And why am I here?”

His frustration was suddenly interrupted by a sound. A sound that indicated someone was behind him.

“Who's there!?” Without even thinking, he turned and drew his sword in one fluid motion. Why would he react this way, and as if it were the most natural thing in the world to him? He pondered this as he pointed his sword at the source of the sound.

“So you have finally awakened, Σ066.”

A good-looking fair-haired woman stood before him. She stared at him with neither malice nor goodwill, but dull ambivalence. Her voice was devoid of emotion.

“That is your development code. Mine is Λ052. My name is Lambda.”

“Σ066… Λ052… Lambda…?”

“Σ066… or rather, Sigma. What are you doing here, Sigma?”

The young man simply stared at her in bewilderment.

“Are you going to attack me with that sword? If not, put it away. Otherwise, hurry up kill me.”

“You don't expect me to kill someone when I don't even know who they are, do you!?”

“I am not your enemy.”

“Then who are you?”

“You can think of me as your sister.”

“We were created in the same cultivation unit. You… don't remember? Did you not undergo the training procedure?”

“What? What the hell are you talking about!?”

“The training procedure must not have been run. Fine. I'll tell you.”

The woman who called herself lambda began her explanation.

This was a magic research laboratory. The young man was part of an experiment to create a superhuman warrior, and the young woman was part of a similar experiment to create a superhuman magician. This knowledge, along with the young man's fighting ability, were planted into their subconscious by automated training procedures while they were nurtured in their vat.

She explained that the one behind the experiment was a man named Gizlof.

“He's the one who stole my memories?”

“The experiment has likely destroyed your memories, as it has mine.”

“So, who is Gizlof, and why is he doing these things?”

“I don't know. The data didn't mention that.” Lambda continued in the same emotionless voice. “By the way, Sigma.”

“Stop calling me that? My name isn't Sigma, it's !”

“So you remember your own name.”

He now saw sadness reflected in her eyes. Was it his fault? Before he even noticed it was there, the light from her eyes had vanished and now threatened to envelop him in their pure blackness.

“… Isn't it strange, the attachment to one's name? No matter the name, you are still you.”

“You really want to be called 'Lambda'? Don't you have a real name?”

“I don't know. Nor do I need to. For self identification, Lambda is sufficient.”

“Anyway, what do you intend to do now? Stay here?”

“Not sure. I don't think there's anyone else here. Why don't we head out and look for a town or something?”

“The capital of this country is just east of this location.”

“Did your friend Data tell you that too?”

“Either way, if we meet enough people, I'm sure one of them will recognize us. What do you say?”

“I have no objections.”

Thus the young man and woman left the ruins of the laboratory and set out on their journey.

Sigma: Development Code Σ066

A human modified to be a superhuman front-line warrior. With the proper training, he could wield unbelievable power. He lost his memory as a side effect of the procedure and now knows only his name.

He now journeys to discover his true identity. Although his outward appearance is that of a boy, he is as strong and able as an adult.

The program “Gizlof's Dying Wish” still sleeps within him. If this program is ever invoked, Gizlof's unfulfilled wish to “conquer this world” may lead him down a dark road.

Lambda: Development Code Λ052

A human modified to be a superhuman mage.

She possesses great magical potential and was entrusted with certain knowledge by the training procedure she received. However, her memories and emotions were sacrificed.

She has short, dirty blonde hair and is in reality McClaine's sister Mariandel. Unlike McClaine, the experiments performed on her were a success and she was transported to a larger laboratory.

She travels with the protagonist in hopes of regaining her memories and emotions. As the story begins, she sees her companion as nothing more than a fellow survivor.
